I cleaned my registry and improved many things but now
the Windows Explorer Task Pane (a sliding menu of Folder
Tasks, Other Places, and Details) takes up the left two
inches of my screen. I haven't figured out how to get rid
of it and prevent it from reappearing. I can, of course,
revert to before the registry cleaning but this leaves
registry errors that cause other problems. Any
suggestions much appreciated.

From Windows Explorer, select menu Tools | Folder Options... On the General
tab select 'Use Windows classic folders' option and click OK.
