If I build a new computer can I use my Windows XP on the
new one? I will be using the hard drive from my old
computer (the one that currently has XP on it) as a slave
on the new computer.

Greetings --
Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are _not_ transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Thanks, Bruce! I was kind of hoping I could keep it on
the old computer until I got the new one set up but I
guess that's not possible, eh? I've had XP activated for
several months so I should be OK in that department.
I'll check the links you sent! Thanks again!

Are you asking about moving it to the new computer or having it
both at once? If it's a retail copy, you can move it to the new
one (but you can't do that with an OEM copy, which has a license
that permanently ties it to the first computer it's installed
on).
You can't have it on both at once (unless you buy a second
license, which unfortunately costs more than a second copy from a
discount source). Nothing new there; that's the same rule that's
been in effect for *every* version of Windows. The only thing new
with XP is that there's now an enforcement mechanism.

Yes, assuming it is not an OEM version specific to the machine and that you
have the cdrom and key number.

Question, if she installs the old hard drive as the master on the new
computer does she have to do anything at all? This would be a good idea
if the speeds of the two drives are pretty much the same. Would save a
lot of trouble. :-)

A repair install so the proper drivers would be installed.
