have been unable to download Windows Updates for a couple of months now.
The problem started when I "upgraded" from XP home version to XP
Professional. I began getting an error message when I tried to run Windows
Update that said, "Administrators Only! Must be logged on as Administrator
to access this feature"
Naturally I went to Windows Support and tried to use the suggestions to fix
the problem. I tried all the suggested fixes including:
- making changes in Windows Update permissions in my computer's
registry, and
- renaming the System32/catroot2 file
- disabling all firewall protection
None of this worked, I still got the same error message. Frustrated, I
uninstalled XP Professional and re-installed XP Home version. The problem
did not go away.
I have noticed that when I right-click on "Windows Update" in my start menu
, the current user is "HPPAV\xxxxx," where "xxxxx" is a former XP name of my
computer that is no longer valid. I tried renaming my computer with that
name, still cannot access WIndows Updates. When I right-click Windows
Update and select "run as...," it will not allow me to change to another
valid User i.d. that has administrator privileges.
I have even recently tried starting Windows in safe mode in order to be able
to see and access the Administrator Account directly. I still get the same
current user when I right-click WIndows Update ("HPPAV\xxxx"), and when I
try to switch to the Administrator account (which I set up with a password),
I get an error that says it is invalid or has an invalid password -- when I
KNOW it is correct!
This is very frustrating. I've started getting system crashes with error
messages that say to update WIndows files, which I cannot do. I know I am
missing critical Updates.
By the way, I am running Windows XP home (which I purchased and registered)
on a 1.2 gHz computer with 192MB RAM with a Pentium III processor.
I tried getting help on this NG a couple of months ago, but just got a
reprint of the Microsoft Widndows website XP help screen with the registry
and catroot2 suggestions - which I had already done!
I would appreciate any help with this. Surely I am not the only one who is
having this problem!?
Thanks in advance ...
Peter
