WinXP recovery

I'm sort of new at all this computer stuff so im asking
for a little bit of help here when i couldn't find any
information at the windows support page online.

well my problem is that i rebooted my computer and it
suddenly said that "system file is corrupted or missing"
and that the computer is unbootable and i should put in
the windows XP cd and repair this with the recovery
console.

i follow the promts to the recovery console then im droped
into command prompt at C:\windows i know that the file im
having trouble is at (c:\windows\system32\config\system)
but i don't know which command or what exactly i am meant
to be doing through this command prompt to repair my
system file so that windows can reboot again.

if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated
