doesn't anyone know how to run scandisk in XP ?

Open help and support and search for Scandisk. Click on the line marked
"Full Text Search Matches" One of the options will be called "New Ways to
do Familiar Tasks.

It's now called CheckDisk (chkdsk). You can read all about it here.
