I recently purchased a new notebook for my daughter. She
spilled coffee all over it and ruined it.
Can I leaglly transfer the Windows XP software to another
machine I have.

No. Assuming that XP came with the notebook, it's an OEM version.
And unfortunately, the OEM version's license ties it permanently
to the first computer it's installed on. This is in my view the
single biggest disadvantage of OEM versions.

Not to mention that it's probably an image rather than an install CD, so it
wouldn't work anyway.

You should be able to clean the notebook.
