my folders are opening up as a search window when I double
on them. i have to right click and hit open for them to
open the way they should. how can i change them back to
normal

open window explorer
on toolbar click on "Folders" icon.
then go to Tool->folder options->view
and click on "Apply to all folder"->ok
and close the folder

From reading your post, I think this is what you want...
Select any window with a folder. Click on Tools > Folder options... In
the dialog box that appears, be sure the General tab is selected. Under
"Tasks", at the top, select "Use Windows classic folders", Apply, OK. This
will affect all folders.
