View Full Version : Memory.dmp and something puzzling

It doesn't always happen, but two or three times
recently, I've run across this problem.

I'd be playing Kyodai, and suddenly the screen would jump
and resize, then come back again. At the same time
ZoneAlarm would indicate furious internet activities,
though I've not opened any browser. (I have cable
connection).

I may or may not continue with the game, but eventually
when I shut down the computer, I get the blue screen
saying something has gone wrong and then it'd write to
the memory dump.

When I next go to defrag, I find a huge area of
fragmented files, which is memory.dmp, and it refuses to
be defragmented.

I have 2 questions.

1. Did the blue screen occurred because of something
external, like through the internet, or was it the game?
2. How can I get the disk defragged properly?

That memory dump file is used only once. There is no need to
defragment it. It however indicates that your pagefile.sys file is
fragmented. The pagefile is used to create the memory dump file
then the pagefile is recreated in another location when you restart
the computer. You can delete the memory dump file and reclaim the
disk space.

There have been reports of trouble playing that game with DirectX
and some video adapters. Rundll32.exe may have been trying to
download updated drivers.
