I need some help...I don't know if I need some neat
utility products, or none at all.

I want to upgrade to a new PC. My current PC is a 450
MHz Pentium IV with HD C: (10 GB) and HD: D (40GB) and CD-
R running registered Windows XP Home.

I want to buy a 2.4 GHz Pentium with 800 MHz FSB and 120
GB HD and CD-RW. I want to keep the current one as a
test PC, so I will buy Windows XP Home for the new one as
well.

I would like to copy or transfer the programs, data etc.
from current PC to new. I don't have CDROM or source
disk for all the programs installed (must be >50). My
idea is to put HD C: from my current PC into the new PC
as HD D: Then, after all copy/transfer from D: to C:
work is done, I will replace HD D: in the new PC with HD
D: in the current PC.

I know that Windows XP may make this process difficult
because of its built in protection schemes. Also, I
don't know if I can just copy programs from one HD to
another in the same PC without any problems. By the way,
there are programs installed on my current PC's HD D: as
well as on HD C:

I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions to
make this transition quick, easy and trouble free. Also,
which products do I need to help me do all this? Do I
need to backup some things to CDROM before I start? I
can't be the first person to do this with XP so it can't
be rocket science, right?

Thanks a lot,
from worried Bill

Well, what you want to do is not rocket science, but sure asking for a
million bucks.

First, copy-pasting is no good, and you know that.

BEST way to clean-install the programs one by one using their original CDs
or disks. If you cannot find the original CDs perhaps you may settle for
some downloads.

In order to transfer file documents (data), simply back them up and
"copy-paste". You can even plug the whole drive into the new system and
perform this.

Or create a small network and transfer them hassle-free.

See the review of five "Migration Utilities" in PC Magazine, June 17,
2003, "Make Your PC Work Better".
Very likely your new machine will include such a tool, eg.,
"IntelliMover" or "AlohaBob PC Relocator".
