Problems With 5.1

i installed a dmx 6 fire 24\96 soundcard in to my p.c,i am having problems configuring the surround sound to 5.1,i have done the speaker test and it shows all speakers are working but i only get sound as if configured to 2 speakers ,headphones and microphone are working ok,it seems i may have a problem with the drivers any advice would be greatly apprieciated,windows tells me the speakers are muted ,but on checking them as in the test they are fine,i have downloaded some drivers for the soundcard and it's made no difference ,my pc has crashed twice on trying to play a cd,the error report says it's drivers but i'm at a loss now as what to to do next
