When I start to capture video from my camaorder via dv to Windows movie maker
through firewire connection after a few minutes my laptop just shuts
down, turns off as if battery removedThe fan is usually running when this
happens. When I reboot it does not go to scandisk...just goes to xp log on

What are the specs of the laptop? Is it maybe overheating?

Overheating problem.
Ensure the camcorder is connected to its external power source and not its
internal battery.... and consider something like:

My Toshiba overheated all the time, it spent 7 weeks in the local Toshiba
Service Center and still shut down often, but has only done it once in the
last 3 weeks after I got one of these. And that one time was my own fault,
trying to catch up on a tremendous amount of messages in Outlook Express.
You do need to ensure that the fans on the cooler go the right way. Most
notebooks pull air IN underneath and this is find for them, however some
blow air OUT, in which case you need a different cooler.
If you turn the notebook upside down and find dust bunnies on the outside of
the fan openings, it's pulling air IN!!!

Thanks Graham...much to digest but looks as if the problem may be in there
somewhere. The laptop is a 30 gb acer fat 32.I need a larger hdd to get
video and I think it may be overheating
