SP2 rendering your XP-SP1 CD worthless?

What happens if I have to reformat and reinstall my OS? All I have is the
CDs from HP with XP-Home/SP1. Should I uninstall SP2 to prevent that from
happening?

Nope, not true. My system has SP2, and I have an XPPro SP1a CD. I've done
several repair installs and several format and reinstalls with no problem
(yes, I mess with my system way, way too much! :)

Then why have I read that it can't be done? What did you do to make the
impossible possible? ;-) Do you have a regular XP CD or one from your PCs
mfg.? Have you let MS know they are wrong and you were able to do it
using a SP1 CD?

Where do I lean how to crosspost differently where it's not annoying? If I
add several NG at once I still get complaints - so how do you want me to
crosspost? I only know of two ways using OE.

I crosspost because there isn't always someone who knows the answer on one
NG, but there may be on another.

When you repair install using your SP1 disc you will have to reinstall your
SP2 update.

You are one the many people how may have the "dreaded" recovery disks.
These type of disk will normally restore an image of the hard drive at the
time the PC was "shipped" out of the factory. Normally, you do not need to
worry about the SP2 re-install prevention since the recovery would normally
ignore this. You do have to worry about all/any files you need to keep. A
re-install with recovery disk "usually" erases the hard drive.

One suggestion: There exists disk utilities which will let you create an
newer recovery disk(s). I know that Ghost 2003 would let you do this but
there are others.

You are posting similar questions all over the place. You have been given
many answers. It really sounds like you don't have the knowledge needed to
do this yourself. I am not trying to belittle you. Not having the knowledge
is much different from not trying to gain the knowledge. I suggest you take
some courses to gain the knowledge. In the meantime take Shenan Stanley's
advise in another thread, backup you data and reinstall Windows. If you are
not comfortable with this find a good repair tech who is. Explain in detail
to them what problems you are having, what you want done, and get a written
estimate for the repairs. You will probably have to pay something for the
diagnosis.

have 6 CDs for WXP.

## I'm well aware of that since we've had to reformat and reinstall the OS
on this machine 3 times in the past 2 years. Now some techs here are
recommending we do it again.

## But they GHOST all the problems as well!!! And the problems we're having
with WXP are endless. I have the HD GHOSTED, I also have backups on CDs of
all my software, pictures etc,.... but what good would it be to use those
Norton CDs? I'd have all the same problems after the reinstall.

** Been there - done that. It's expensive. The problems start coming back
once I start getting the critical updates and start adding software. And
yes I have anti-virus software (Norton), and Spybot and Adaware and BHOD and
CW Shredder and MS-Antispyware and HiJack this and the ZoneAlarm
firewall...... I defrag and I run checkdisk etc etc etc......
