View Full Version : NIS update problem with XP

I'm just wondering if anybody else has come across the
following problem in the last week or so. This has nothing
to do with 811493 as I've never downloaded it. I'm posting
it here partly to see if anybody else has had the same
problem and also because I've managed to narrow it down a
bit so this might help somebody else. There is nothing
about it on the Symantec site as far as I can see and I
can't see any easy way of reporting it to Symantec either.

I'm using XP Home on a two month old laptop (2.4 G, 1G of
RAM). I'm using Norton Internet Security (Firewall and
Anti-Virus) and did a manual update a few nights ago. I
didn't pay much attention to what updates I was
downloading at the time as I've never had any problems
with NIS before.

Upon restarting and logging on, I got some very odd
behaviour. There was no Windows startup sound and although
my desktop showed up and I could use Explorer, I couldn't
access many programs, Control Panel froze and the usual
NAV and Firewall icons were not showing in the taskbar.
After about 5 minutes or so, the Windows sound would play,
the Norton icons would show and things would be more or
less normal I think.

I decided after restarting a few times to uninstall NIS
and do a System Restore which brought things back to
normal. I then reinstalled NIS and downloaded all the
available updates hoping this would fix things. No - same
weird behaviour.

So I uninstalled again and downloaded the updates one by
one (17 MB in all) - Virus defs, URL updates, Security
updates, Intrusion detection sigs etc avoiding most
updates to the actual programs as I figured the problem
must lie there. The bits I haven't downloaded are
Symantec Common Driver SymEvent
Symantec Common Client Updates
Symantec Redirector Update (I've no idea what this does).

The computer is now behaving as normal. I also have NIS on
my desktop computer (alos XP Home) and did a check for
updates. The Common Driver and Common Client updates
didn't show up so I must have already downloaded them
without a problem. I declined Redirector just in case it
is the culprit as I don't want to have to do the same
thing all over again.

Any ideas, similar experience or positive feedback
welcomed.

I finally found the answer to the above by searching again around the
Symantec site. Difficult to find. The link below provides a link under Hot
Topics to resolving the problem. It is XP specific and I expect a lot of
people may experience the problem.
