When using windows explorer, I find hundreds of
application files in various folders with weird titles.
Most are about 85k in size and the dates vary. For
example; Aa2A, date created 03/13/2003, size 1.2 Mb.
Also, I find a lot of files stored on my hard drive that
are *.rar files. I clean them out and they come back.
It seems as though these files are regenerating and
slowly taking up space.

You are seeing the System Restore files. It gives many of the saved
files letters and number which are self-extracting compressed files.
These files will not be visible is you check Hide protected
operating system files under Folder Options.
