My computer has always been slow w/ XP. A friend
reloaded XP but there was no change in speed. This
Machine has 64 MB of memory and lots of free space on the
HD. For reference, It takes 15 sec to start Word and
Excel. Is this the best I can expect? Thanks!

Christie:
The first thing to consider is an upgrade to at least 128MB RAM. According
to the MS Windows XP Home Edition System Requirements
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/sysreqs.asp
"128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported;
may limit performance and some features)". I personally would recommend
upgrading to at least 256MB.

With 64MB of Ram yes. Add more RAM it is pretty cheap right now. Also have
you uninstalled all the Compaq crap?
