shutdown failure

windows xp stops responding (hangs) when shutting down.
the message windows is saving your settings appears on
the blue end screen but wont go any further ... can
anyone help
tried the xp website and was told to scan for any new
updates but which i did and installed service pack 1a but
this made no diffirence any help would be great as this
is driving me mad
