Does XP DEFRAG the Registry?

I tried a tool that says it DEFRAGS the Registry in NT/
2000. I noticed that on my XP computer none of my files
in the areas this program checked were fragmented. I know
Windows 98 defragmented the Registry when running the
Defragmenter program. What about Windows XP?

Microsoft's defrag APIs support defragmenting the registry online. That
means that ANY defragmenter (including the built-in defragmenter) should be
able to defragment registry hives without any problems.

No! Defrag does NOT defrag the registry.

You're all talking past each other. Greg is probably right about the
defrag APIs allowing defragger apps to defragment the registry hive
*files*, even though those files are in use.

Registry hives need to be *compacted* to remove deleted key entries, but
defragmenters don't do that. For that you need to rely on XP or use a
third-party tool that compacts the registry hives.
