defrag won't run-Jupiter can you help?

Sony RX860 - Windows XP Home... applications quit
responding and the defragmentor won't run. Solutions?

Are there any error messages?

Reboot and then try Defrag..

Did problems start recently?
If so, try System Restore:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
Choose a date before problems started.

Try these other items and then try defrag again.
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:

Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.

Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)
Reboot and try Defrag.
