Sony Dvd Cam

I'm at my wits end! I have been trying to use Movie Maker to edit some clips i took on holiday. I have managed to import the files but when I drag them onto the time frame thingy the whole program freezes and I can not do anything else.
I'm looking into codecs (media player says I do not have the right codec for the files) but that is even more confusing. Can anyone help? :confused:

If it's a DVD digital camcorder, you're going to have to convert the files
before importing into WMM.
