Hi all,
This has me stumped ?. I have a new system and there is
no windows sounds ie: start up, shut down, e-card e-
mails, delete items etc, but music and game sounds are ok.
I have checked in sounds and audio devices under sounds
and the sound scheme is set on windows default and under
program events most items have little speakers next to
them, If I highlight one of these you get to play the
sound but there is nothing, also I have checked the
volume to make sure it is not on mute.
Very frustrating : Help Please
Regards

Startup Sounds are missing:
TweakUI/General/Beep on errors (verify that the box is checked).
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
System Sounds are missing:
Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't
have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not set), double
click (Default) and delete it.
If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.

What are your .wav files associated with?
Control Panel \ Folder Options \ File Types. Type W to get down the
list to WAV. The default is Windows Media Player. Click Advanced to go
inside, and Play should be highlighted. I've looked in the Edit area
of mine. Under Action it says
%Open
This is the line for Application Used, including all four quote marks:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /Open "%L"
Use DDE is checked. Application is wmplayer. Topic is System.

You may want to try this. Look for "where did my sounds go"
