View Full Version : Where does XP store the "New File" list template?

In Win9x/Me, you could browse to C:\Windows\ShellNew. Where is this data
stored in XP?

I know you can use TweakUI to change the list, but is there a way you can
change it by browsing to a particular folder or registry location?

SeaMaid,

See section "Extending the New Submenu" in this documentation:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/shellcc/platform/shell/programmersguide/shell_basics/shell_basics_extending/context.asp

If you use the "Templates" method, the actual Template file can be from any
of these locations:

%Userprofile%\Templates
%Allusersprofile%\Templates
%Systemroot%\ShellNew

In my XP Pro SP2 installation, there is no folder for:

%Systemroot%\ShellNew
C:\Windows\ShellNew

I guess my "new file" info template is stored in one of these other 2
places:

%Userprofile%\Templates
%Allusersprofile%\Templates

Yes, by default it's not there. But that's another possible location where
XP looks for the Template file.
