Lost Identity

Massive problems with computer - ended up reinstalling
WinXP and now old ID is gone from the login screen but not
from the computer (i.e. files still visible in Windows
Explorer). The computer will not recognize all old
programs as installed for the current user.

How can I get the computer to recognize that all the old
stuff is still there? Can this be done without
reinstalling everything into the new identity file?
