View Full Version : Disabling Autoplay on Win XP SP2
September 20th 05, 09:51 PM
How do disable autoplay once and for all? I have tried telling XP not to take any actions when
I insert a CD or flash card or turn on a USB drive, but XP always scans the drive, as if it is
looking for some file/content-type that it can ask about.
I don't want XP to do ANYTHING with ANY type of media. Ever. How do I do this?

My Computer > right-click on the icon for your optical drive > select
Properties > select AutoPlay tab > place a checkmark in 'Take no action' >
click Apply > repeat for all content types > click OK. Note that this method
will not work if you are a member of a domain or otherwise subject to group
policy.

To get to the configuration screen for this setting, go to Start Menu \ Run and type in:
gpedit.msc
You should select Administrative Templates \ System.
Double click the item, and set the radio button to Enabled, and change the “Turn off Autoplay on” to All Drives.
Now you should be safe from the autoplay monster.
