I am new to XP but have found a much slower performance
than from 98SE. the programs are slower to open, the boot
is slower, the shutdown is slower. I have 320megs of
memory. Is there a systematic way to enhance the overall
performance. The easy answer is more memory and that may
be the right one. but what else?

If 819634 applies you need to uninstall old 811493 and reinstall new =
811493.

You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 =
(MS03-013) Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and =
use it to remove parasites.
