View Full Version : XP print spooler doesn't work

Is there a way to refresh the print spooler in WIndows XP? I'm finding that
my new HP system doesn't work with the print spooler, yet it works fine if
the thing's disabled.

The HP help system is useless, as one might expect, in that the printer guys
say it's an computer problem, hence they can't help, and the computer guys
say it's a printer problem. Since the computer works fine otherwise, and
the printer works fine on several other computers, AND the problem appears
on every printer I attach to the system in question, I have to believe it's
an HP/XP problem, since the hardware/software all work fine when the OS is
WIN98SE.

Has someone else run into this? The warranty runs out on this box and its
siblings pretty soon, and I'd like to avoid sending the things back.

Thanks,

The issue would appear to be caused by the drivers. but for the print
spooler just issue at the command prompt
net stop spooler
net start spooler

Yes, this is the obvious solution, but it doesn't help. The effect of
whatever problem exists here is a disruption of communication between most
tasks and the printer, e.g. scan-to-printer, etc, but not for programs that
"talk" directly to the printer, e.g. Outlook Express, among others. Word,
Wordpad, and Notebook just produce blank paper when the spooler is turned
on, but print properly when the spooler is disabled via the printer dialog
in control panel.

The spooler apparently fails with EVERY printer, and I've tried several HP
printers and some from other mfg's, that's attached to this particular,
straight-out-of-the-box, HP desktop with factory-installed WindowsXP. It
has failed in this mode since day 1, and I've got to decide whether to send
this batch of systems back to the vendor. It will be inconvenient, however.

Any other suggestions?

If this has been an issue with the bog standard OEM install from the
beginning I think the vendor should be included in the resolution, don't
you?

This problem is perennial in this forum and I have never seen a solution.

You might as well send the boxes back and demand that the supply chain address the problem.

This has been tried, thanks to the help droids at HP. Unfortunately, it
doesn't matter which printer and driver I use, and I have lots of 'em, the
spooler doesn't work properly. Lots of functions "die" when the spooler is
turned on, and most of 'em come back when it's turned off.
