While starting Windows XP one fine day, it did not show any users to click on
and only blank screen. Normally, it shows the names of the users to select.
The machine is a standalone machine in a workgroup and does not belong to any
domain.

To fix the problem, I tried using recovery console.

While using recovery console, it asks for Administrator password. I am not
sure if there is any user named "Administrator" or not. However, there are
users who are administrators on the machine and if I give password for them,
it does not accept it and after three attempts, I have to reboot and start
all over with the same result.

How do I fix this.

Any help will be appreciated.

The recovery password is the one set for the Administrator of the
machine. It is usually a blank on XP Home machines, so just press
"Enter".

Every XP installation has a built in account named "Administrator".
When other accounts with administrator privileges are created this
account is hidden.

For XP Pro at installation time the routine asks for a password for this
account. XP Home does not. So if Home, as Malke said, just assume it's
blank and press enter. For Pro try a blank one too or ask whoever set
up the machine what password they assigned. Another option is to boot
into safe mode and log into one of the other admin level accounts and
change the password for the "Administrator" account from there.

Here is a link that provides information on how to recover from a lost
password:

Hello,

Lost win pass can be changed using Password Changer utility. It's small
and easy to use, yet really powerful. Just give it a try.
