My computer seems to be running slower of late, ive ran various scans etc and
nothing, when i go into my task manager i have 42 processes running, i
suspect this is the problem as my machine is slow at start up and shut down.
What i was wondering was what processes i should only be running? I only use
a firewall, a few spyware blasters and sometimes my internet connection at
start up so what should i be doing? Any help would be great, thanks in
advance!!

42 isn't that many. There is no magic/baseline number. It all depends
on what hardware/software is installed. Usually, XP has around 27+
services running after a clean install. A website, BlackViper made a
name for himself, by his descriptions and requirements for Services.
The website is being re-worked and isn't currently available. The way
to control/manage it is start with Startups & Watchdog apps. These
are generally the things in the System Tray (by Time display). Some
are necessary (AV/Firewall), but others like printer watchdogs and
media players (Real, QuickTime) don't need to be in "Idling mode".
You can check them by using MSConfig, Startup (TAB). Services
can be checked with the Microsoft Management Console snap-in called
Services.Msc - Click Start, Run (Type) Services.Msc [Enter]
Services have Start modes that equate to Registry values from 0-4.
Zero is the highest priority to 4 which is disabled. Using the Services
snap-in they appear as "Automatic, Manual or Disabled". Just be
careful with changing Service start modes. They (Services) have a
dependency where one service depends on another. If you change
any it's best to set them to manual and not disabled. Before making
any Service changes it would a good idea to export the Services list
so you have a record of their original states. Better yet, take a XP
System Image - just in case.

Hello, Agree with R.McCarty. Here is a link to "Black Vipers'" work.
http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm
I printed my settings and the "BlackViper" info. I found this the best way
(for me) to compare settings.
I use a free version of a product called "WinPatrol"
http://www.winpatrol.com , provides a basic list of startup items and the
ability to disable each item from running at start up. Has several other
abilities.
I use several clean up maintenance programs at least once a week, including
the one's provided by Microsoft.
Take Care.

See this site for info on addressing a slow system:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

Check out what programs are running at these sites to make an informed
decision about what you want to have running.

42 is not a big deal in itself. Just for background info tho, an
anti-virus/firewall/anti-spyware can/will add 2 or 3 items EACH to the
list.
