View Full Version : Problems with PowerDVD and WinXP-Home

I have the following:

WinXP-Home
Aseus motherboard with nVidia nforce drivers
onboard audio/video

PowerDVD-XP version 4

Recently had a DVD drive fail. The system was under warranty so the
computer shop replaced the LiteOn DVD drive with a new one. During the
process they also upgraded my nVidia drivers.

Ever since they did this, PowerDVD will not correctly play DVDs. After
20-40 minutes, PowerDVD starts skipping or the audio and video lose
synchronization.

I've taken this back to the shop twice...they replaced the DVD drive again,
but their final conclusion is that it is a conflict between PowerDVD and the
nVidia drivers and WinXP. Never mind this wasn't a problem for about 8
months before they worked on it!! Their solution is to use Windows Media
Player, which may or may not be a good solution. I don't know how it will
work as a DVD player. I am curios about the other problem and why I cannot
now use PowerDVD.

Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

Thanks.

Have you tried installing the older nVidia drivers back on your system? If
it's an incompatibility between the new drivers and Power DVD, then that may
be the answer.

Posted 'as is'. If there are any spelling and/or grammar mistakes, they
were a direct result of my fingers and brain not being synchronized or my
lack of caffeine.

I have not tried installing the older nVidia drivers. I'm not sure how to
do that, and I don't want to make matters worse with my system. The shop
where I bought it did not offer to do that for me. All they suggested was
using WinMedia Player for DVDs.

What's the model nVidia do you have in your system, and what driver version
are you currently using?

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Performance and Maintenance --> System
or Start --> Control Panel --> System (depending on the view)

In the system properties window, click on the Hardware tab then Device
Manager

Open the Display adapters by clicking on the + then double click your nVidia
adapter and then Driver tab. Note the name of the adapter and the driver
date and version.

Once we have that, we can let you know what you need to do to install the
older drivers.

I'm not at home right now where that computer is. However, if you'll go to
this website, you'll see what I have currently installed:

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=nforce_udp_winxp_2.03

They put version 2.03 on my machine. What I had prior to that was what they
installed when they built the system in September 2002.

Thanks for all of your help.

Are you sure they didn't put the 2.41 or 2.42 drivers on your system? For
whatever reason, nVidia removed those drivers from their site. If you do
have the 2.41 or 2.42 then follow the instructions that you can download
from their site from the link you specified before
(http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/Recovery_instructions.zip).

If you do have 2.03, then I'm not exactly sure where to get the previous
drivers. I thought they would have been on nVidia's site, but after a short
browsing, I was unable to locate them. If you find the previous release,
simply download them and follow the instructions that you can downlaod from
http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/Recovery_instructions.zip.

They did put the 2.03 on, I'm pretty sure. Because I watched the guy doing
it and saw the note about the 2.41 or 2.42 being removed. I will try to
look at home to see what version of the file he download - I still have it
on the computer.

Would I be safe to create a Restore Point in XP and than try to uninstall
what I have and reinstall from the original disc that they gave me with the
motherboard? Would I be able to use my restore point and go back to where
I'm at now if something doesn't work right?

Thanks!!

Yes, that should work (creating the restore point and installing the ones
from the original cd). You'll first want to remove the current drivers from
add/remove programs and reboot (cancelling any new hardware wizard that
starts up after rebooting).

If for whatever reason I'm unable to get back to the earlier version of the
drivers, will I be able to use the System Restore and get back to where I'm
at now with version 2.03 of the drivers?

Thanks.

I would think that a restore would bring you back to the 2.03 drivers as
that's what it's designed for, but I can't be 100% sure. Make sure to keep
the 2.03 driver install package that you have so you'd be able to re-install
them in the event the restore doesn't work.

Posted 'as is'. If there are any spelling and/or grammar mistakes, they
were a direct result of my fingers and brain not being synchronized or my
lack of caffeine.

Last night I did uninstall the newer drivers and install the drivers that
came with my system. At least for now, after running two tests in PowerDVD,
everything seems to work pretty well. Time will tell for sure...as we
continue to use it. Very interesting indeed!
