Hmm.. Then your choices boil down to a couple.
1) If you have a floppy drive in the laptop, and access
to another PC with a floppy drive, you can download the
XP boot disks (which include the Recovery Console) from:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;310994
From there, boot the floppies, and follow the onscreen
instructions to get to the recovery console.
If you manage to get into the recovery console - run:
chkdsk /r
2) Ask HP to fix the problem. This won't be easy.
They'll say it's a known bug in XP, but that doesn't
solve the problem for you, nor does it help with your
loss of data, and lack of a way to fix that loss of
data. They designed the hardware, and if it was a known
bug, they should provide a means to recover from it,
without wiping out your system.
Other than that, I don't know of any other options that
come to mind, but there may be others - try searching
www.expers-exchange.com for the error, and you might find
what you need. If not, posting the error there might get
you better results than calling HP.
This could also be an NTLDR problem, and I believe
searching this newsgroup will pop up some answers to that.
