LPR printer problem event 6161 error 259

I'm using XP with SP2, trying to print to a LPR printer port. I have
been experiencing this problem intermittently over the past few weeks,
but the inability to print is now permanent.

I continue to recieve event 6161 error 259 (0x103) even after rebooting
the machine. What makes this interesting (frustrating) is that I can
ALWAYS produce a test page using the LPR port on the printer. But, even
right afterward I won't be able to print from common office applications
like Word etc.

When I do release a Word / Outlook / Excel etc. print job, I see it
briefly in the print queue - but it disappears as if it had been
printed. What I've tried in various combinations (that hasn't worked):
- Starting, stopping and restarting the print spooler;
- rebooting the machine;
- rebooting the printer;
- ensured that the SPOOLER directory was fully shared;
- rebooting the gateway that connects to the printer (LPR has a static
IP); and
- my last resort was to remove patch KB896423 (referenced elsewhere as
a possible source).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What type of printer? Is this an LPR Port or Standard TCP/IP Port in LPR
mode? Are you using the static address or a hostname in the port
configuration?

What is the print processor? Printer properties, Advanced, Print Processor.
Change it to winprint, RAW if it is not to see if that resolves the issue.
