I use XP home version. I recently updated my Emachine
computer with Service Pack 1, used the fine for a few
days. Then on the next day when I turned the computer, I
found nothing on the screen except the background and the
curser. No buttons, no bars. I can use Ctrl, Alt, and
Delete option to get to some programs, but 90% of them
remain non-functional. Is there a way I can savage my
computer other than re-install it? Please help!

Try a System Restore. Also, when you do Ctrl, Alt and Del select logoff
and see what happens.
