My computer spontaneously reboots while I'm trying to
burn a CD. I've upgraded the firmware on my CDRW and the
drivers as well. I use Roxio 5 for XP.
I am at my wits end. Hopefully someone can help.

Might be bad memory. Visit http://www.memtest86.com, DL memtest-86, create
the floppy, and boot it. It will run a series of tests, run AT LEAST one
full pass, overnight even better, if you have a bad memory module or overly
aggressive memory timings, it will usually report errorrs at some point.
Or it might be a bad/inadequate power supply. If you have any other 12v
devices you can take offline (second HD, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, case fans, etc.)
while burning, do it, if only to see if the burn then completes. If so,
it's probably a PSU problem.
Burning a CD is a CPU intensive operation, so if your system has ANY
vulnerabilities in this area, something like a CD burn will be highly
susceptible. I recommend running Prime95 (
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm ) and VERIFY the stability of your
system. Many people THINK they have a very stable system, but can't
legitimately make that claim w/o running some stress tests. Prime95 is one
of the best tools for that purpose. If you can run Prime95 for 24hrs
straight w/o errors (or worse, hanging or crashing), that's a pretty good
sign. Very few people ever do this simple test, and might be surprised how
vulnerable their systems really are! IOW, your CD burn problems may be a
symptom of a more basic problem.
