My computer in general is acting real slow during opening
folders and such. The internet has also been running slow
due to this. I dont have much open, maybe just 1-2
programs of a small size, and it still runs slow. If
someone has AIM and could help me, I would be very
grateful. My IM is: Coledplay. Or, you can just post
here what you think is the problem.

Thank you

Gino;
Does this apply:
Some computers have issues with 811493 causing a slowdown, others do
not. (only if installed 28 May 2003 or earlier)
The issue seems to be a conflict with Windows Update 811493 and
antivirus applications.
Uninstall 811493 from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.
If a warning comes up about other applications, ignore it.
Uninstalling through Add/Remove Programs is far better than System
Restore to remove an application or fix.
*****Microsoft UPDATED this page 28 May 2003*****
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=819634
If you up installed 811493 after 29 May 2003, you have the repaired
version and this is not likely the cause of your issues.
You can install 811493 and the files in the older version will be
overwritten and the issue will be gone.

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q815411

Otherwise:
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

I installed XP Home w/SP1 on a Dell Dimension 2350 with a P4 2.2GHz cpu and
128M of RAM. I installed MS Office 2K and Norton Internet Security 2002 w/
Norton Antivirus and all the updates for the apps.

The problem is the PC will be intermittently be slow. I found the OS is
running
a process called "system" with user name of "system" and is using 99% of the
CPU and uses only 28K of memory. I can't kill the process because it is
"system".

I disabled autoupdate and messenger services (didn't like the new random
popup messages from unknown AH's anyway. <g> Yes I know about blocking "all
others".)

I'm not sure if that cured the problem, I'm waiting on feedback from the
users of the PC.

What I really would like to know is what service(s) is using up all the CPU
time and what I can do to correct it.

Anyone know?

Any enlightenment will be appreciated...
Thanx, Ron

Jupiter & Gino

From what I can tell MS miss titled the article when they released the new
version of 811493: "This article was previously published under the title:
“Programs Run Slower After You Install Windows XP SP-1”. The contents of
the hotfix itself have not changed, only the Knowledge Base documentation
was revised for improved accuracy and clarity."

From what I've read here and on other news, Windows XP SP-1 does run
slower. How do we report this to MS so they can publish a fix?
