I can't seem to get the program to work and I suspect that
I haven't given it the proper commands. I need help.

Just execute diskpart (no parameters) and use it in interactive mode!

XP's DiskPart utility is capable of only partitioning a hard drive that =
is empty.
For example, if you were to install a new second drive, DiskPart can be
used to partition and format it. DiskPart cannot segregate current =
files from
free space, therefore, only a sophisticated third-party partitioning =
program,
such as Partition Magic 8 (www.powerquest.com), can be used with a drive
that already has Windows XP installed.

If you wish to start over from scratch, then follow this procedure:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your =
computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD.....follow the prompt.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should delete the existing =
partition(s),=20
create new partitions, then format the primary partition =
(preferably NTFS) and=20
proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Windows XP Clean Install:=20

Hi, David.

They are both right!

There are two versions of DiskPart in WinXP. One is a command that runs
from the Recovery Console (boot to it from the WinXP CD-ROM); this one can
only add or delete partitions.

"DiskPart.exe is a text-mode command interpreter that is separate from the
Windows XP Professional command prompt", to quote the WinXP Pro Resource Kit
(p. 528). For details on this one, just search the Help and Support Center
for "diskpart". As an indication of its abilities, a few of its available
commands are "assign", "break disk", "clean" and "extend".

Watch out. Like any powerful program, it can do as much harm as good if
misused.
