Hi Phil,
Go to Start/Run - type in "msmsgs" without the quotes and click ok. Click
on the Preferences tab and uncheck, "Run Windows Messenger when Windows
starts " and "Allow Windows messenger to run in the background".

Phil, sorry I left out one step. Go to Start/Run - type in "msmsgs"
without the quotes and click ok. Click on Tools/Options - on the Preferences
tab uncheck the following, "Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts " and
"Allow Windows messenger to run in the background" then click OK.
When you restart your system, Windows Messenger should no longer start at
start up.
