I have recently added a HP Photosmart 3210 to my setup. Intsallation appeared
to go OK and the printer works fine BUT......
When I start the PC new hardware is detected - the Printer (and a USB Mass
Storage device AND a disc drive). The new hardware wizard starts but
I get the message -
Cannot install this hardware - Problem installing
HP3210USB -
The specified service does not exist as an installed
service.
I have tried HPCS and they gave up (said it was a XP fault).
The advise from HP included deleting LPTENUM from the registry but I get a
message - unable to delete LPTENUM.
Any ideas would be welcome.

Power-off your HP printer, then physically disconnect it
from your PC. Then uninstall your HP printer software,
reboot your PC, install the latest HP printer software,
then reconnect your printer when prompted to do so
during the HP printer software installation.
Software Installation instructions:
1. Click the Download now button to begin the download.
2. Choose Open to start the download and run the software installer.
3. If you are connecting the HP All-in-One device over a network, please refer to the Setup Poster which shipped with your HP
All-in-One for network setup and software installation instructions.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the installation process.
5. USB ONLY: Connect the USB cable between your HP All-in-One device and your PC when directed by on-screen instructions, then
turn on your HP All-in-One device.
6. Wait for additional on-screen installation instructions before using your HP All-in-One device.

The wizard still fails and gives a message:
The file name, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect

Same issue using a Windows 2000 pro system. Install fails with "An
error occurred during the initialization of the device. The data is
invalid." Printer is established but no scanner recognition in system
at all. HP support took me thru installs from CD, folder created from
CD, and internet download...all to no avail. Said my error was with
operating system - not HP 3210. Can anybody connect the dots?
