Hi - grateful for any advice
I got the recommended update from windows update on 25th (adds set
program access and defaults to start menu) as well as one for media
player
When i search for files from start the program (explorer) encounters a
problem and needs to close
Also wkcal.exe is "failing to initialize properly" at startup. This
wouldn't bother me but my antivirus somehow got corrupted and i had to
uninstall it. when i try to reinstall it or install another i get the
application failed to initialize correctly".
Grateful for any advice

Run chkdsk /r, and review the output.
If still not resolved, you can try
SFC /SCANNOW.

Thanks Dave
It found and replaced all sorts of bad clusters.
Then i got a message on startup that works calendar had encountered a
problem and needed to close. I didn't get that before - and as a
result got the same message about virus scan when i tried to install
it. Seems wkcal.exe was still using the installer or something.
For interest only, what does sfc/scannow do, how would I have found it
and used it and what would it do.

sfc /scannow is a tool in XP (and win2k) that is used to verify
all protected (operating system mainly) files.
Each file is scanned, and if found to be damaged, replaced by a correct
version. This tool needs the xp CD, unless a copy of the files already
exists on the harddrive.
