Monitor Dark

I have a HP d530 w/ an Intel 82865G graphics card. The display has always
been extremely dark. I has assumed it was the monitor, but I now have a new
monitor and it is still dark. The other day I went to change the refresh
rate and the brightness and contrast were fixed. Upon restarting the
computer the display was again dark. change the refresh and it's bright
again. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Check for updates to the graphics card and then see if there are any options
to manually change the settings in the advanced properties of the graphics
card.
