can't charge battery on XP from ME in laptop

I have upgraded from ME to XP pro on my presario laptop.
Now I can't charge my batteries. I run fine on a/c power
but when I put in a battery to recharge it goes up to 9%
and dumps back to 1%.
If I turn off the computer to charge the battery; it
doesn't charge.
Someone please help!!

I'm having trouble seeing this as a Windows XP issue...
Sounds like a bad battery to me.

Especially when you added, "If I turn off the computer to charge the
battery; it doesn't charge."

Windows XP is not going to affect a powered down PC.
