There are many ways to improve your boot time in windows
XP. First of all, there are many services you can disable
which are set to start automatically by default. You can
find a very good guide here: http://www.blackviper.com/.
Be sure to look on the left for the XP section as he has a
section for 2K as well.

In MSCONFIG, open up the tab that shows ALL those little
executables starting up and slowing down your boot and
open up a browser and point it here:
http://www.lafn.org/webconnect/mentor/startup/PENINDEX.HTM

When you see one that you think may be unnecessary, search
for it on this page. 9/10 times you'll find it and you
can click on it and see if it is necessary. I have been
using this site for quite a while and it has NEVER steered
me wrong.

Follow these two cleanings by downloading bootvis from
Microsoft at
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/platform/performance/fa
stboot/bootvis.mspx . It is very simple to use and is a
utility designed to make some small changes to your system
to help it boot up and shut down more quickly.

I did all these things and definitely saw an improvement,
but the as far as shut down time goes, the 2 things that
made the biggest difference for me were setting the system
to NOT clear the pagefile at shutdown and using the
classic login/logout screens and NOT the fancy welcome and
goodbye graphics that seem to bring systems to a halt.
Also, you can disable the startup and shutdown sounds.

Hope some of this helps.
