Wireless Firewall Settings

Would someone kindly let me know the router settings required so that webcam
connections via Windows Messenger 5.1 can penetrate the firewall in both
Belkin and Linksys wireless routers. (different locations).

The only way I can get connected now is to disable the firewall with obvious
vulnerability.

It helps if both routers support UPnP. Scroll down to "Configurations That
Work/Do Not Work"

Well Messenger actually uses ports 5004 through 65535 UDP for voice/video conversations, so
if you're simply doing port restriction, you will have to open them all for Messenger to
work.

As well, if the routers supported UPnP, then it would automatically open, forward and close
the ports are necessary when they're used.

My understanding is that it opens all these ports because it doesn't know
which port will be used. Presumably once a connection has been made it knows
which ports are in use... so does it close the other 65534 or leave them all
open until the connection is broken or you sign out of Messenger?

Hi,

I'm afraid that's incorrect.

Messenger decides what port it's going to use, opens and forwards -that- port (actually
there's two of them), and then sends the request to the contact.

When the voice/video/file transfer/et al is over/cancelled, it removes the port entry.
