No Sound

When opening windows XP 2000, I usually get a opening
sound. I no longer get that sound, nor any other sound
either from email alerts to the music played on my
personal website or any other sites as well. My speakers
are plugged in, volumn is up - nothing. This occurred
approximately a week ago, and still continuing. Help.
