Got a notebook PC running XP sp2 with all updates. After trying to install
some RIM software for a Blackberry got a embedded C++ prompt to install,
exited that, open Win Explorer, PC locked up. Manually turned off and then
restart, now wont boot, just get the XP logo screen. Can boot just fine in
Safe Mode with networking, cannot boot with last good config. Device Mgr
shows no issues, no spyware or virus according to those apps. What else
should I check here? Safe mode restarts properly. Any ideas short of
rebuilding the durn thing?

Try rolling back with System Restore.

System restore doest work in safe mode. Got XP to boot using diagnositic
start up in msconfig. I will see what can be done with system restore there.
