System Restore not saving restore points

First of all, I've had issues with Automatic Update not working correctly.
So, after a while, I turned everything off (firewalls, anti-virus, etc.) and
was able to get those updates.

Now system restore doesn't work! Every time the pc is rebooted, system
restore is squeeky clean! No restore points. I've checked settings and the
"turn system restore off" checkbox is NOT checked. Also, I've set it to use
max of disk space (12%).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event
Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here.

One of our computers (mine) seems to be doing what you describe. I checked
the things that help said to check and they are running, but there are no
checkpoints.

I have plenty of FREE space on my hard drive (54GB), so I don't know why it
says it can't find free space.

No it's not. BUT, Dell has a "hidden" restore partition there.

I've only had this PC for less than 2 months and it was working fine (sys
restore) before I got those @#$&* updates!

Hi,

HarddiskVolume4 appears to be the problem. Stop System Restore from
monitoring all but the partition Windows is installed on. What happens
is if *any* monitored partition falls below 200mb's of free space
System Restore will suspend and *all* restore points will be deleted.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden
files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files
" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You
should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known
file types" is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View,
Details is selected and then select View, Choose Details and check
before Name, Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

Now if you right click your C drive in Windows Explorer what size does
it say your hard disk is and how much free space?

I think you're on the ball again <g>.

However, if any drive / partition only has 200 mb free space then there
could be other problems coming, apart from the system restore one.
shqipo needs to get out the crystal ball. What the problems might be
will obviously depend on how the partition is being used.

Hi Gerry,

I suspect the problem is that System Restore is monitoring a recovery
partition created by the OEM. These recovery partitions are notorious
for causing problems with System Restore, and should not be monitored.

A recovery partition is simply a partition where the OEM stores the
files to recover the system, rather than shipping them on CD's or DVD's.

That's correct, that's what Dell did :( I got suspicious when I tried to run
Norton ParitionMagic and saw this partion there which I didn't make (2 days
after I got my PC) and Dell phone reps said they created it for restoration.

I have an external (partitioned) HD and I am not sure why Sys Restore
started to pick that one, it didn't do that before.
