I once found a way of getting rid of Messenger - but I now have it back
again. I don't need it - how can I get rid of it for good?

If you're referring to Windows Messenger and not the Messenger Service, see

The topic of how to stop the annoyning SPAM coming from
Messenger Service Pop Up's is a common issue in this
newsgroup.

This artilce shows you how to sort the problme out for
FREE.... You do NOT have to buy software to do this for
you!
