Serious problem with SP 2 installation

I did a clean install of XP yesterday. It went okay. I then tried to install
SP2, but after a couple of hours, it hung up at the very, very end--and
stayed there for 2 more hours. (The blue line was all the way across, but
the window wouldn't close.) When I tried to shut down my computer, it warned
me that the install was still in progress. I waited two hours more. No
change. I ended up cancelling the install and removing the SP2. (It took a
long time). I tried downloading and installing it again, but the same thing
happened. I then gave up and installed SP 1. It also hung up at the end, but
I shut down anyway and when I checked my Add/Remove, it was there okay. (This
made me think t he SP2 was probably there too when I removed it.) I'd be
happy with just SP2 but this presents one BIG PROBLEM for me. Before doing
the clean install of XP, I backed up all my files and settings to and
external drive, using the files and transfer wizard. But when I went to
recover them the transfer wizard (with SP 1) said the folder was empty. It
was not empty. There were 19.3 Gigabytes in it. I can only assume they can't
be seen with the SP 1 wizard. Is this correct? If so, what can I do? If I
try to download SP2 and leave it run for several hours, would it be safe to
shut down and hope I have it? I would, of course, create a restore point
first. Or would I be taking a big risk? Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Well, on the third try I managed to install SP 2 very quickly and without a
problem. I still have the F & S wizard problem, however. I'll post a new
question on that. This question is now closed.

Hi Don, and sorry to ask a question here, but I can't find a way to post a
question about XP Pro here. I only see a "reply" fnction. I have a problem
with Win XP Pro on a friends computer that I'm trying to resolve. If I can
send a reply then I should be able to post, but can't. Could you possibly
help somehow? Thanks a lot. I also had the same problem with XP once last
year, going through three attempts before it finally installed on the
computer. In fact, that is the friends computer that is now having issues.

Mike, where is "here"? How are you attempting to post? If
you are doing it through a browser, what's the URL? There
are many ways of accessing the newsgroups!

In the main OE window, right click on an empty spot on the toolbar
that contains the "Reply" button.
The popup that action generates should have 3 options, "Toolbar", "Views
Bar"
and "Customize...".
Choose Customize and look in the left pane for "New Post",
highlight it and click add.

When you are following up on an earlier post keep all replies in the
same thread.

Composing a New Message

To compose a new message, click the New Post button in the lower-right
frame. In
the window that appears, a form will allow you to compose a new message
with fields
for the sender's name, sender's e-mail, subject, and body. By default,
the currently
selected newsgroup will appear in the Newsgroups field. You can also
attach a file to
your new message. Once you have filled out the message fields and
clicked the Send
link, your message will be processed and posted to the newsgroup.

Composing a Reply

You can reply to individual messages by clicking the Post Reply button
in the lower-
right frame. In the new message window, a form will allow you to compose
a reply
with fields for the sender's name, sender's e-mail, subject (already
filled in), and body.
You can also attach a file to your new message and quote the original
message. Once
you have filled out the message fields and clicked the Send link, your
message will be
processed and posted.

How were you getting SP2? Downloading or off CD. If you have a 56 k
modem you should not try downloading. Installing from CD is the easiest
way.

Hi All. I resolved the SP2 problem on the third try. It simply went quickly
and smoothly without a problem. I wonder why. Anyway, that takes care of
this problem.
