Whichever windows programme I select it's only workable in 2 second bursts.
I have to type this in 2 second bursts.
The top window blue bar turns from blue to grey every 2 seconds and the
cursor disappears during this time.
It makes work nearly impossible.
Please help!

There is something running intermittently in the background. Open task
manager by pressing ctrl-alt-del. On the processes tab what is taking
the CPU time when the problem happens?

Have you done a thorough scan for malware using a combination of
programs in safe mode, both for viral and non viral malware?

Thanks Rock, you hit the nail on the head.
It was iexplore.exe that was causing the problem which I have now removed
and things are stable again.
I run Spybot which had given me a clean bill of health.
