Start up password prob.

Hi,
I have a computer running XP home and until recently it has been running
fine but now when I start it up I get the screen asking for a password. I
don't need to place a password into the box, I just press enter and my
settings load up. I have never had to load a password before so why has it
suddenly started now and how can I get the compute to load straight away
again?

Also, are there any IBM personal computer newsgroups. (Netvista A30)?

To logon automtically, do the following:

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
In the box that pops up, replace Administrator in the "User
Name" box with your user account. Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if your account does
not have a password.
Click OK twice and reboot to see if you get the desired
results.

As for newsgroups dedicated to IBM PC's, it depends on what
news server you're using. In Outlook Express, look in the left
hand column for the name of your news account. Right click on
it and select "Newsgroups" from the menu. Enter IBM in the
search box.

This was probably caused by installing the .net framework from windows
update. Nepatsfan gave you one resolution. Here is some additional info.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

thanks for the info on the newsgroups.

The other info hasn't worked though as the tick box was already unticked and
as I consiquence I am unable to follow the rest of the instructions. I don't
get a pop up box and can not see the way of changing administrator as you
suggest.

Cheers anyway. I have posted again about the password problem.

I looked at your other post. How exactly did you go about
deleting the other account? If you did not use the User
Accounts applet in Control Panel then you might want to check
the following:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties from the menu.
Click on the Advanced tab.
In the User Profiles section, click on the Settings button.
In the box that pops up, is there a listing for an "Account
Unknown"?
If so, click on it to hightlight it and hit the Delete button.

That's the only other thing I can think of that may be causing
your problem.
