What is the Limit on number of fonts installed on PC before we weaken
performance?

I have 294 (with pre-installed WinXP & M$ Office 2003) before we install
anything else, such as Corel Draw & Corel WordPerfect Office.

Thanks!

There is no limitation to the number of fonts which can be installed
in Windows XP. However, the boot time may increase due to the
requirement to read the information for all those fonts while the system
is starting up.

Actually, this isn't true for XP as it was for Win9x/ME. The OP can feel
comfortable about installing new fonts. If he gets to where he's
routinely working with 1,000 fonts or so, a font manager would be in
order.

There is no such limit. More fonts do not affect performance.

If there is a limit that affects performance, I dont know. I do know
that 1000 fonts is never a problem, however.

Right, I just picked 1,000 fonts number out of the air thinking that
keeping track of 1,000 or more fonts would be much easier with a font
mgr., not that having that many would cause a Windows problem.

Rack up another wrong reply by our resident - and most laughable -

Thus far I havn't come across an XP pc with a "too many font" problem.
My 1000 is just around the number I see on some pcs I fix, but I'm not
there to fix a font problem.

There was an "issue" in win98 with a "too many font" or font file
problem, but I dont recall the exact details, but it was often
recommended to keep the number of fonts in win98 to around 1000. Perhaps
people are still following that advice, which is perhaps why I dont
generally see pcs with more than 1000 fonts :)

I do have a buddy in publishing tho who claims to have 5000 fonts
installed on an XP laptop. Heck, he even has AOL and his laptop travels
around the globe and never fails.

What I wonder is that if there really is a limit. For example, suppose
one installed 50,000 fonts?

Thanks, folks, for many great responses.
I'll use BitStream Font Navigator, which worked fine on Win98, and is
now installed with my WP Office 2000.

<LOL>

I thought that 1000 fonts was a lot. 50,000 would qualify as a boat load.

This ought to be good for a laugh.

Good lord! I just opened C:\WINDOWS\Fonts, Ctrl + A, right clicked and
selected Properties. Uff da! Property sheets started opening, 'til who
laid the rail. Don't ever do that.

I right clicked the folder and I have 385 fonts, so 385 property sheets
opened.

XP comes with about 136 fonts. XP SP2 has about 139 fonts.

My point here is that 385 fonts seems excessive to me.

Heck, I'm still closing property sheets. ;-) My mouse is going to get worn
out. I finally killed explorer.exe and restarted it.

My Dad's L.C. Smith only has one font.
