XP Home won't boot

My Windows XP Home Edition goes through the initial black
loading screen but when it gets to the blue Microsoft
Windows page just before I usually can log on, it stops
making any progress. I've tried starting it up in safe
mode but that doesn't help either. I have a recovery CD
that came with my computer but the only function it allows
is to reinstall the system while losing my harddrive. I'm
not very familiar with the Windows XP Operational Systems
CD but when I tried to load that in order to repair any
errors in my system, it asks for an "administrative
password" but won't accept anything that I put in. Any
suggestions?

maybe dont enter a password and just press enter ?
